How to Choose the Right Shampoo

The average hair care aisle has hundreds of shampoos and hair care products and they are not all for women. Men have just as many choices as women and it is important to find the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type.

There are a few types of shampoo that are made by most manufacturers for the most common hair types. For men with short hair “normal” shampoos usually work fine if there are no problems with dryness, oil, dandruff, or other scalp problems. If you do have a problem with your scalp or hair choose a shampoo that specifically targets the problem you are having such as dryness, oiliness, dandruff, etc.

Most normal shampoos won't strip natural oils from the hair and scalp because they are formulated to cleanse gently. They will remove dirt and excess oil without causing residue buildup or the loss of important and natural oils that give hair its shine.

Shampoos for oily hair have cleansers that are designed to remove excess oil. Men with oily hair can get healthy hair without excess grease with shampoo for oily hair but men without excess oil many find that this type of shampoo dries out their scalp.

Shampoos for dry hair, also called moisturizing shampoo, are designed to add moisture to the hair and scalp for men with dry hair and a dry scalp. If you don’t have dry hair moisturizing shampoos can add too much moisture that will weight down hair and even make it too oily.

Men with thin hair who want to add volume to their hair can use thickening or volumizing shampoos. These types of shampoos help hair retain water and lift each hair the cuticle creating more volume. Because volumizing shampoos open up hair cells and give them more volume the hair shaft is more vulnerable to damage so a good conditioner is important if you are using volumizing shampoos.

Dandruff is a common problem for men and there are many shampoos available that will help reduce the unsightly flakes. Most dandruff is caused by a dry scalp which causes irritation and flaky skin. Sometimes a moisturizing shampoo is enough to sooth the irritated scalp and other times dandruff shampoos with special ingredients are needed.

How to Style Long Hair

John Butler dreadlocks hairstyle

Although long hair is more common for women, long hair can still be attractive and stylish on men. Most people consider hair below the ear to be long for a man, but many men wear their hair longer than this. Women have more choices when it comes to styling long hair but there are still many for men to choose from that will give them a stylish look. If you are wondering how to style long hair, here are some common ways to get stylish looks.

A ponytail is one stylish way for men with long hair to style their hair. Ponytails are easy to do and create a more sophisticated look for men with long hair. Women’s ponytails can be worn both at the nape of the neck and higher in the middle of the head. Men however usually look best with a ponytail at the nape of the neck.

Single braids can also be an attractive style for men and a good way to style long hair. Hair can be gathered at the nape of the neck and braided. This style is also sophisticated and easy to do with some practice.

Sometimes the best looking style for long hair is just to let it hang freely. Smooth combed hair can be very stylish and attractive on men. Sometimes a little gel or other type of styling product should be used to keep hair from being frizzy but be sure not to apply too much product or your hair will look greasy.

Other types of styles for long hair include dreadlocks or corn rows. These types of styles are most common for men of African decent who have very curly hair but Caucasian men can sometimes wear dreads and cornrows if their hair is the right texture. Dreadlocks and cornrows require a visit to the salon or at least assistance from someone who knows how to style hair in that manner.

Choosing to have long hair is a personal decision and many men choose to wear their hair long for personal, religions, and style reasons. Trying to figure out how to style long hair is a bit more complicated for men because of their limited choices but with a little experimentation a great style is easy to find. It is also important to remember that long hair is prone to split ends and breakage so it is important to use conditioner and get frequent trims to keep hair looking its best.

How To Stop Hair Loss or Balding

There are as many rumors as to what causes baldness, as there are rumors of how to stop hair loss or balding. The problem, is trying to figure out which ones are fact, and which ones are myths, without investing an enormous amount of money in the process.

One of the most common myths about baldness is that it is inherited from the mother’s male relatives. The truth is, baldness can come from either side of the family. If all your male relatives are bald, chances are you will eventually have the same problem.

Another myth on how to stop hair loss or baldness is simply not to wear a hat. Although wearing a hat all the time could cause breakage of the hair, which would lead to a frizzy look, it does not cut off the circulation in the scalp, which causes the hair to fall out.

Washing your hair on a daily basis will not make you bald. Keep in mind though; everyone loses about 100 hairs from their head every day. This is a normal process. Although you may notice hair loss in the shower, it does not mean you are going bald.

So, is there any truth in any of the elixirs, conditioners, gels and ointments that are advertised today that do actively stop hair loss? The answer is no. None of these products are indefinite fixes that work to stop hair loss. The products generally won’t hurt you, and may even make your hair appear thicker by including ingredients that plump the strands of hair giving it a fuller appearance. The fact of the matter is, when you ask how to stop hair loss or baldness, you can’t, but you can slow it down.

Basically, at this current time, you only have two choices to help slow down the process of hair loss. Minoxidil and Finasteride are the only available products that actually do what they say they will.

Minoxidil, which goes by the brand name of Rogaine, is the more popular of the two. Rogaine can be purchased over the counter without a prescription and is a topical solution. It has been found to be most effective on the crown region of the head, but appears not to work as well in the frontal area, where most men have the problem of a receding hairline. Rogaine has been shown to grow a little hair, but is most effective with keeping the hair that is already there.

The only other choice is Finasteride, which goes by the brand name of Propecia. Propecia is a prescription drug that is utilized to shrink the prostate. Growing or maintaining ones hair was a side effect of the drug, just as impotency is another side effect of the drug. This is not to say that if you choose to take Propecia to slow down the balding process that you will become impotent, it is just one of the listed side effects that could occur, but rarely does.

If you choose either one of the afore mentioned products as a solution on how you can stop baldness and hair loss, you must be aware that even though you may see a little hair growth, they are both meant to be hair retainers, and both products, to be effective, must be used indefinitely. When you stop using the product, you are right back where you started.

Take heart though, there are studies being done all the time on how to stop baldness and hair loss, with many theories on the horizon. Studies are being done right now on the hormone DHT that may bring hope in the future for those who are searching for a product to prevent baldness.

How to Get Rid of Dandruff

Dandruff is an annoying problem that many people deal with. Dandruff is visible flakes of skin that are shed from the scalp on a continual basis. There are a few different causes of dandruff including dry skin on the scalp, fungus, and yeast on the scalp all of which increase the amount of visible skin flakes.

There are also many treatments for dandruff, most of which are at least somewhat effective to treat dandruff. Mild dandruff will usually respond to over the counter dandruff shampoos and for dandruff caused by a dry scalp shampoos that are designed for use with a dry scalp work best. Shampoos should be used about twice a week according to the label.

For moderate dandruff over the counter shampoos can be effective but they have to be used more often and the lather has to be left on the scalp longer. The shampoo should be used every other day and the lather should be left on the scalp for about ten minutes for the best effect.

Severe dandruff sufferers may need to use specialty shampoos that contain ingredients to treat yeast and fungal caused dandruff. Ingredients such as selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, and climbazole can be effective for severe dandruff.

Other hair care techniques can help to manage dandruff. Blow drying hair can dry out the scalp and worsen dandruff so let hair dry naturally. Be sure to brush hair from the scalp outwards with a soft natural bristle brush to distribute the natural oil on your scalp. This helps prevent oil from building up on the scalp and worsening dandruff.

Keeping your scalp healthy is important if you want to get rid of dandruff. Never use ordinary soap on your scalp as it can cause irritation. You should also wash your scalp gently and avoid too much scrubbing which can also irritate the scalp. Once you have cleared up your dandruff it is important not to overuse dandruff shampoos because they can be too harsh on your scalp. Only use them once a week to maintain a healthy scalp.

If your dandruff is very severe and does not respond to over the counter dandruff shampoos you may have a more serious problem. If your dandruff is not spread all over your scalp or is very thick and not flaky in some areas you may have a more serious problem. Psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis are skin conditions that can resemble severe dandruff and require help from a dermatologist to treat.

Choosing The Right Hair Color for You

First and foremost, the best & the right hair color is always as close to natural as possible. If you are trying to color grey, know that you will need to choose a hair color that is of a warm base color, (meaning that it has some red, as the base color). This does not, however, mean that you must be a red-head, in order to get rid of your grey. Simply that grey hair does not have any warmth, because grey hair is grey because of the lack of pigment, thus, no warmth. If you choose a color that is of an ash undertone, your grey hair will look green, or purple. This is also why you hear the term “blue haired ladies”, because they didn’t choose a color that had warmth in it. “Warm” in hair color, is referring to the colors of the sun, reds, yellows, and oranges. “Cool” or “ash”, is referring to ash colors, greens, blues, and violets.

In order for hair to have a natural color appearance, all three primary colors must be present, red, yellow and blue. Blondes, do not have the red in their hair color. If you have lightened your hair, to a blonde color, and then choose to go back to a darker color, you must remember to add red to the color. Because blondes do not have red, if you simply add a neutral brown to your hair, which is equal part, red, yellow and blue, your hair will soak up all of the red, and you will be left with yellow and blue, which we all know, makes green. This is never a pretty color, and is certainly not a hair color that occurs in nature.

If you are thinking of trying something different, but are afraid of too much change, go for some highlights. First try just a few, a couple of shades lighter than your natural color. It is amazing what a little bit of brightening will do for the face.

If your natural hair color is a level 2, (on the hair color scale, 1 is black, and 10 is white), please be aware, that if you decide to go blonde, (levels 7, 8 and 9), you will be in the salon every 2 to 4 weeks to take care of that re-growth, however, if you choose to only go a couple of shades lighter, you will be able to go longer in between re-touches, but that really depends on how much re-growth, or “roots”, you are willing to see . You hair will grow an average of a half inch a month, and you will see the difference, if you are not willing to do the upkeep of a full color change, then again, highlights would be your best option.

The best way to choose a color that will work best for your, is too look at your skin tones, cool or warm, and the color of your eyebrows. If you are older, try to stay away from darker colors, these colors only make you look drab, and tend accentuate every line, nook, and cranny.
